The Intent

Bamboo GR transformed a former art museum into its largest coworking ecosystem — a 40,000-square-foot hub for founders, creatives, and builders. Within a concrete-dominated space, plants became a primary tool for restoring warmth, guiding movement, and supporting human connection.

The result is a gallery-like environment where plants function as living art and infrastructure, designed to grow with the Bamboo GR community.

The Challenge

The challenge was designing for plant impact within a building defined by scale and microclimates, while allowing key plantings in the main event space to remain mobile as the space evolved.

Our Approach
  • Assessed natural light, spatial layout, and how the space is actually used day to day
  • Selected plant species aligned with environmental conditions and design intent
  • Used placement to create rhythm, refuge, and visual continuity across zones
  • Designed a care strategy focused on longevity, adaptability, and plant health over time

Design Highlights

Plant design at Bamboo GR was shaped by how people arrive, move, gather, and pause throughout the building. High-visibility entry moments were treated as sculptural anchors, using plants to establish tone, guide flow, and soften first impressions, while shared lounges and corridors relied on layered plantings to ground seating areas and ease the hardness of existing materials.

In larger event zones, mobility allowed key plantings to hold presence without limiting reconfiguration, while adjacent shared areas became natural points of gathering that support informal collaboration and connection.

Across multiple levels with shifting light and scale, plants worked alongside the existing architecture to improve wayfinding while adding warmth and softness to key shared spaces, helping the building feel more navigable, human, and connected.

The Outcome

Once the plant design was in place, the building felt more grounded and supportive, balancing its scale with warmth and living presence. What once felt vast and impressive now reads as a place to settle in, dream, strategize, and build.

Members and staff are often found lingering near key foliage areas, using them as informal gathering points and describing the space as an ecosystem that supports their growth.
